Facet Joint Pain

General Description

Facet Joints are joints in your spine used for structure and stabilization. These joints can be found in almost all of the spine except close to the neck and the lowest part of the back. The Facet Joints are what gives your spine the limitations to how far you can bend or stretch. Sometimes these become inflamed, causing pain. Facet Joint Pain typically occurs with age and unless the case is extreme, can be taken care of at home.

Causes

Facet Joint Pain can be caused by a number of things with the most common being age. As you age your joints degrade and cause excess pressure to be put on the facet joints in the spine. As they degrade the space between the spinal vertebrae narrows and the alignment of the facet joints changes. Over time this can lead to Facet Joint Arthritis and can cause damage to the remaining cartilage surrounding the area.

Typical Treatment

There are multiple options for pain relief and rehabilitation if you have Facet Joint Pain. Typically heat or ice can be applied for pain relief, and working with a Physical Therapist can help to properly care for and control the recovery process. Maintaining a good posture when sitting or standing for long periods can relieve pain and promote better back structure.

How to Prevent it

There are only a few ways to prepare for Facet Joint Pain before it occurs. Making sure to maintain a healthy exercise routine and diet, as well as posture can help to keep Facet Joint Pain at bay for as long as possible. When exercising make sure to stretch properly and when lifting heavy weight be sure to use the proper support. The more cautious you are with how you treat your back the longer it will be able to yield proper support without pain.
